Google Search Console Setup: A Step-by-Step Guide
Search Console is free, takes fifteen minutes to set up, and tells you exactly what Google thinks of your site. Most businesses never open it.
Google Analytics tells you what visitors did. Search Console tells you how they found you and what Google thinks of your pages. For SEO, the second is far more useful — and it is free.
Setting it up
- 1Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with the Google account you want to own this.
- 2Choose 'Domain' property and enter yourdomain.com without https or www. This covers every version of your site at once.
- 3Google gives you a TXT record. Add it in your domain registrar's DNS settings, save, and click Verify. DNS can take a few minutes to propagate.
- 4Once verified, open Sitemaps in the left menu and submit: sitemap.xml
- 5Use URL Inspection on your homepage and click Request Indexing.
The three reports that matter
| Report | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Performance | Which queries you appear for, your position, and click-through rate |
| Pages (Indexing) | Which pages Google has indexed and why others were excluded |
| Core Web Vitals | Whether your speed and layout stability pass on mobile |
The one habit worth building
Once a month, open Performance, sort queries by impressions, and look for phrases where you appear on page two with a low click rate. Those are pages that are close. Improving the title tag and adding a section that answers the query properly is often enough to move them onto page one.
