What Is Schema Markup and Why Your Business Needs It
Schema is how you tell Google exactly what your page is, instead of hoping it works it out. It is also how you get star ratings in search results.
Google reads your page as text and infers meaning. Schema markup removes the guessing — it is structured data in your page's code that states plainly: this is a business, this is its address, this is a service, this costs this much, these are the questions it answers.
What you get from it
- Star ratings shown directly in search results
- FAQ dropdowns that expand under your listing and take more screen space
- Breadcrumb trails instead of raw URLs
- Business hours, price range and location in the knowledge panel
- Better eligibility for AI-generated answers, which lean heavily on structured data
Schema is not a direct ranking factor. What it does is increase click-through rate on the position you already hold, which over time influences ranking anyway.
The types a local business needs
| Schema type | What it does |
|---|---|
| LocalBusiness | Name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates, price range |
| Organization | Logo, social profiles, contact points |
| Service | Each service you offer, with area served and price |
| FAQPage | Questions and answers, eligible for search dropdowns |
| BreadcrumbList | Page hierarchy shown in results |
| Review / AggregateRating | Star ratings in search listings |
| Article / BlogPosting | Author, publish date, for blog content |
Getting it right
Schema must describe what is genuinely on the page. Marking up FAQs that do not appear to visitors, or review ratings you invented, is a guideline violation that can result in your rich results being removed entirely.
Test everything with Google's Rich Results Test before and after publishing. A single syntax error can invalidate the whole block silently.
