Why Is My Website Not Showing on Google? (7 Real Causes)

There is a difference between not ranking and not being indexed. Not ranking means Google knows your site but places it low. Not indexed means Google does not know it exists — and no amount of SEO spend fixes that until it is resolved.

First, check which problem you have

Search Google for site:yourdomain.com — with no space after the colon. If results appear, you are indexed and this is a ranking problem. If nothing appears, you are not indexed and one of the causes below applies.

The seven causes

1. 1Never submitted. Google has to discover your site. Add it to Search Console and submit your sitemap.xml — this alone fixes a large share of cases.
2. 2Blocked by robots.txt. Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt. If you see 'Disallow: /', your site is telling Google to stay out. Developers often leave this from staging.
3. 3A noindex tag left in the code. Same cause — a staging setting that survived launch. Search Console's URL Inspection tool will tell you.
4. 4The site is brand new. Indexing can take a few days to a few weeks. Submitting the sitemap speeds it up considerably.
5. 5No unique content. Pages that are mostly images, or text copied from another site, often get crawled but not indexed.
6. 6You are searching for terms far too competitive. You may be indexed and simply sitting on page six for 'website development'.
7. 7A manual penalty. Rare, but Search Console shows it under Security & Manual Actions if it applies.

If you are indexed but not ranking

That is a different job: correct title tags, one page per service, schema markup, page speed, a verified Google Business Profile and genuine reviews. Slower, but it is the work that actually moves position.
