A local search returns two distinct things and they rank differently. The map pack — three businesses with a map — is driven mainly by your Google Business Profile. The organic results below are driven by your website.

This matters because the effort is different. Winning the map pack is mostly profile work: categories, photos, reviews, posts. Winning organic is mostly website work: page structure, content depth, speed, links.

Why 'near me' searches behave differently

You do not optimise for the literal phrase 'near me'. Google substitutes the searcher's location automatically. What you optimise for is being obviously located in that area — consistent address, area names used naturally in content, local citations, and reviews from customers who mention their locality.

The reason SEO is worth doing despite being slow is that it compounds. An article published today that ranks in month four keeps bringing visitors in year two at no additional cost. Ads stop the day the card declines.
