Why Google Business Profile Matters More Than Your Website
It is free, it appears above organic results, and it has a call button. For a local business, no other asset converts like it.
When someone searches for a local service on a phone, the screen fills with a map and three business listings before a single organic result appears. Those three listings — the local pack — take the majority of clicks. Everything below is fighting for what is left.
Your Google Business Profile is how you get into that block. It costs nothing, and for most local businesses it produces more calls than the website does.
What Google actually looks at
Google has stated three broad factors for local ranking: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance. The other two are entirely within your control.
- 1Relevance — does your profile match what was searched? This is driven mostly by your primary category, your services list and your business description.
- 2Distance — how far you are from the searcher. Fixed, unless you open another location.
- 3Prominence — how well known and trusted you appear. Driven by review count and quality, citations across the web, and your website's own authority.
The fields almost everyone leaves empty
- Services — list every one separately with a description, not just a category
- Products — even service businesses can list packages here with prices
- Business description — 750 characters most people leave blank
- Q&A — you can post your own questions and answer them
- Attributes — women-owned, wheelchair accessible, free parking, online appointments
- Google Posts — offers and updates that expire after seven days if not renewed
- Opening date — a small trust signal that takes ten seconds
Why profiles get suspended
Suspension is common and painful to reverse. The usual causes are: keyword stuffing the business name (calling yourself 'Best Cheap Plumber Jaipur 24x7'), using a virtual office or residential address for a business that does not operate there, creating multiple listings for one location, or a sudden burst of reviews that looks purchased.
Your business name field should contain your business name. Nothing else. The temptation to stuff keywords there is strong because it does work briefly, and then the listing disappears entirely.
A simple monthly routine
- 1Post one update or offer each week — takes five minutes
- 2Respond to every review, positive and negative, within 48 hours
- 3Add three or four new photos of recent work
- 4Check the Q&A section for unanswered questions
- 5Review the insights: how many people called, asked for directions, visited the site
This routine takes under thirty minutes a month and separates the profiles that climb from the profiles that stall.
